guildwars was the best for me when armor from buffs was allowed to stack. now all the creativity is mostly taken away from alot of builds. instead of no stacking at all incorporate like how everquest does it. certain buffs can't stack with each other, that way its not to overpowering. they could also inscrease the cap on armor buff allowing two or more buffs to stack limiting them to say 125armor. it will make the game easier by far, but not everyone enjoys a challenge all the time

Guild Wars was the best during its first year. Everything was fun and new back then.

some of you oh godddddd will you give it a rest - moan moan moan gw was ruined on such and such release, anet added such and such features...
Would you really expect gw prophecies to sirvive until today with out the others? You obviously still play it so why do you insist on saying its turned into a terrible game
EDIT: back to the original question...same as the above, nice simple answer

My best experience with Guild Wars was when it was just Prophecies. Most people relied on each other to help them get through the game, I never saw "Ping your build" or "kick him! hes a noob". It was just about having fun and completing the game with whoever would help you.
There have been improvements (skills, heroes, titles, expansions) that keep some people wanting to play just a little longer but overall the game has lost the original luster.
Factions was fun for the first few weeks, watching the new dances and trying out skills, however you realize that Assassins are not an expansion on Warriors and you can't really charge in head on.

2. Player base has been decreasing with spikes when Factions and Nightfall released so hero's was a great way for a couple to have a good team (NO MORE PUGS).
3. Lack of variety in skins. Flameberge and Fellblade were your two choices for swords and finding ones with a decent stat was impossible. Pretty much s.o.l. if you wanted to play with something besides crafter / collector weapons.
4. Gold drops could result in crap and if it had a good mod getting it off was nearly impossible. Turned several superior vigor into tanned hides. Now with perfect salavage kits, get the mod and keep the item.
5. Lack of storage. I remember sharing one storage slot space amongst four characters and no material storage. Mules were essential just to hold material and runes for armor.
It would take a while to list all the improvements but to me game has gotten better. Economy may have gotten worse for the power traders but to me cheap perfect weapons are just fine. I could care less about the rarity of weapons since I get the weapons I want based on what I think they look like.

Those memories are nice but it had to change I beleve people did kick people for being noobs sometime, but u cant change human nature now can we. OH MY GOD can u remember instead of pinging your skills, you had to type them onto the screen

Before the community became filled with 9 yrs old braggin' Leroys, that is, before Factions.
The game in itself is fine. It overall (I emphasize overall) improved as time passed.

The build ping is the worst thing ever added to the game. Well, maybe the top 5 anyway. Discouraged PuGs AND encourage wiki build abuse.
I think honestly, its all up to opinion as to when the golden age was.
I think, the golden age was the first year. Not for the reasons others here say, but for the fact that when GW was released, it was unlike any other MMO out there. Even the debate of exactly what kind of game it is still lingers. Those of us who started in those early days and kept playing through the first year proved that something different CAN work in this industry. GW is (was) an oddball in a world of game clones and those who play it make it a success, so, the golden age continues until the day GW becomes WoW_Wars. Which every other MMO out there is basically another effing WoW.. LOTRO. yea. Try the week free tiral for a week of wasted time.

Prophecies by far was the best. No loot scaling, no issues with bots, no repetitive dungeon runs, Tomb and Sorrows Furnace was always a viable option for people to make money, you leveled as you progressed through the game instead of leaving noob island at almost 20 and no hard mode with overpowering pve skills.
Things I liked after Prophecies was heroes, alliance battles, the art work for factions and nightfall and the dervish class.
